Note: This item is an update to the transportation deadline extension referenced below on 5/3/2021.

Please note that, pursuant to Executive Order(s) issued by the Governor for the COVID-19 crisis, the Governor has extended through June 24, 2021, Section 3635 of the Education Law, the deadline for parents to file transportation requests with their school district in order to bbtain transportation for their children for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school year.

Please note: This Executive Order would also include child care transportation which also had a due date of April 1.

ALL forms received after the June 24, 2021 date will be place in a waiting file and students will be added as per NYS School Law 58:8. This law states that a late request may be granted if "it can be provided under existing transportation arrangements at no additional cost to the District".

The ONLY other exception is if a student has moved into the District within 30 (thirty) days of the date on the application and all necessary documentation can be provided.

    Special Education Procedures

Parents of a student classified as a student in need of special education may secure District transportation to their student’s NPS for a distance up to 50 miles from the student’s home if certain conditions are met by the New York Education Law. Parents who are planning on placing their student in a private special education school and are requesting District transportation for the 2021-2022 school year must also submit the Transportation Request Form.

If the NPS special education school is between 15 and 50 miles from the student’s home, then the parent must contact the East Ramapo Central School District Office of Special Student Services to arrange for a review by the District’s Committee on Special Education (CSE).

The Education Law states that students with disabilities parentally placed in private schools who are requesting District transportation beyond 15 miles and up to 50 miles from their home are entitled to such transportation if the child is attending the NPS for receiving services or programs similar to special educational programs recommended for such student by the local CSE.  Parents should contact the Special Student Services Office at 845-577-6046 to arrange for a CSE meeting for your student if needed to request District transportation for the 2021-2022 school year as indicated above.

    Deadlines

Please note that due to the closure of schools pursuant to the Executive Order(s) issued by the Governor for the COVID-19 crisis and recognizing that such requests need  to be incorporated into a school district’s budget, the Department directs all public school districts to accept all parental requests for transportation to charter and nonpublic schools submitted on or before April 1, 2021.   The Department deems such Executive Order(s) be a reasonable excuse for a delay under Ed. Law 3635.

Parents must complete and submit the District’s Transportation Request Form by April 1, 2021, to request transportation to your student’s NPS for the 2021-2022 school year.  A copy of the form is available at the Transportation Office, or can be downloaded from the District’s website.

The Transportation Office will review each application for NPS transportation and will issue a verification of the student’s transportation to the parents. Parents may also want to check with their respective student’s NPS which may coordinate the completion and submission of these forms to the Transportation Office. The Education Law will approve timely requests for transportation to a nonpublic school within 15 miles of the student's home.
